not bad, but to me the sign is better, but one thing I would do is reduce the size of the avatar, I try (as a standard) to make them 100px x 100px in size, most forums that allow you to upload your own custom avatars only allow 100px x 100px in size. Also have to watch out for is the size of the file. I done a few custom pieces my self. Like on my site I use this as my avatar.
which is 100px x 100px in size. The file size is pretty large so i only use it on my site. As for banners I have done, well one of them is my sign which is for my clan, but I also have done stat images for Enemy Territory Quake Wars, that updates it's self every hour displaying your stats. Example as follows
