hrm. All the time I spent on phpBB helping out over there, I have never heard of this issue. The only issue I have ever heard or knew of was signatures not saving and that was usually human error on there part or a cookies issue. I do suggest upgrading to at least BBtoNuke 2.0.22 for that one you are using did have a bit of security holes. I use right now the BBtoNuke 2.0.22 since I have mine modified and not willing to spend all day trying to alter the update to mine, Basically there is nothing more special about 2.0.23. minor changes.
Upgrading only will take a few min, all you do is like DoC said, Do them in order,
2.0.17 to 2.0.18 then do 2.0.18 to 2.0.19 and so on. Make sure you upload all the file changes and do all of the database changes. But I will strongly recommend you do go to at least 2.0.22, for security reasons.
Other then that, I would need to look at what you are talking about then figure out which files I would need to dissect since BB2Nuke is not completely like phpBB, in the files manor.
