Post Phpbb3 -vs- nukebb Posted: Sun Mar 16, 2008 6:56 am

I believe ive got to quit arguing with people about this version versus that version....but i do get ever so tired of hearing
"Hey, are you going to port to the new phpBB3".....to which i ALWAYS reply..... "Why would i do that".......
And i swaer if i hear the excuse "Cause its the Newest Greatest BB out"...im going to beat someone with my keyboard!

For those of you that havent done your homework, and your so concerned about the latest Forum Systems so far, the best comparison page ive seen can be found here: http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/compare.php

Now, before everyone gets so excited....if your using NUKE ( one of the 4 modern versions ), chances are, phpBB3 is NOT an UPGRADE !!!
Ive yet to see an itom on that list that isnt already available in NukeBB ( Which is what your using if your using a nuke distro ) !!!

NukeBB incorporated most of those 'New' features over a year ago...which kinda makes you wander who is determining what is considered 'New' in the development community...

Since ive had to say it over 20 times in the last week for all that have asked...ill say it one more time so we can avoid the run around and debates ... phpBB3 will provide NOTHING NEW to you if you convert from nuke to stand alone phpBB3 !!!

Also, for those that are asking when phpBB3 will be incorporated as the base for the forums of Nuke...it wont be happening for at least 15 months, at which time..just MAYBE they may provide a new feature at that time!

Words to live by: "Newer doesnt always mean Better"!

thats true, but here is the problem. people like what is new
and they always like what looks different, you know there is nothing new on it and maybe I do too, but guess what a lot of other people will look at the way phpbb3 looks and they will decide there is a lot of new things Sarcastic

BlackFox,

You are most certainly right in that aspect.."People Like Bright New Shiny Things"....

However, unless a person is using stand alone phpBB2.....those would be the ONLY people that would get a "New" product....

For those that are using nukeBB, They would actualy be 'Downgrading' ...and the only thing NEW would be a name....

So is a 'Name' worth a switch ?

'Tabs' where introduced about 2 years ago to nuke, only in Nuke Evolution by default the rest require file edit mods to be installed to achieve the same goal...

mostly though, its more on the theme designers for those features, as its not the functionality thats different, but the 'appearance' Getting 'Themers' to 'Think outside the box' is a tedious task at best!

You will not recieve help from me if i have to go digging for your CMS information and version, If i have to take the time to play 21 questions, then you can take the time to google! No Copyright, no support either!

Absolutely, tabs is nothing new, it is merely cosmetic. A quick trip to Dynamic Drives website will give you dozens of tabbed menu systems you could integrate very easily.
Under the hood, phpBB3 has made some improvements, for example how it handles the multi-lingual aspect of the forum and yes, groups are handled in a better way BUT I'll be sticking to my BBtoNuke (or phpBB ported for nuke).
Why? phpBB3 is just a baby, it will be screaming, crapping and throwing tantrums eveywhere for at least the next year, maybe two but my phpBB2.x.x - well every man, woman, child, his dog, her dog and the inbred redneck down the road has had a go at hacking it so it is pretty robust by now :)
