Using existing phpbb3 forum with nuke?Posted:
Wed May 07, 2008 4:29 pm
Hello,
I currently admin a clan site which has an existing phpbb3 forum.
Now, i know nothing about nuke so this may be a stupid question....
If i buy a nuke them from here, is it possible to hook my existing phpbb3 forum into it?
Will the forum skin that (i believe) comes with a nuke template work against a phpbb3 forum?
We are an Unreal Tournament Clan that are about to setup a COD4 server you see. I really like the Call of Duty 4 Ultimate theme, but which what got me thinking about using a nuke template, but is it possible to customize that template header to include UT2004 and UT3 logos? If so, do i do that or do you guys do it?
Thanks for any help and sorry for the questions...

i swear i posted about phpBB3 somewhere...and im soo sorry i cant recall where i posted about it...
Heres the deal...
First to answer your question...NO..as of this moment you can NOT intergrate phpBB3 to a nuke distro without having to modify the session control system...basicly, it can be done with a crap load of editing, but ultimatly you will still have seperate logins,
1 login for Nuke Admin,
1 login for Nuke user,
1 login for Forums Admin
1 login for Forums user
Which your users will eventually complain about!
Ive said it once, and ill say it again...nukeBB forums have EVERY feature of phpBB3 plus some more!
If your thinking about switching from nukeBB to phpBB3, then first your going to have to wait for the developers to create the port for it...
and even when you do finally receive the port, your going to find that you will have LESS features then in nukeBB! Ultimatly, your not really UPGRADING, your actually DOWNGRADING for less features!
As for Migrating from phpBB3 to Nuke, good luck finding someone that has a SQL conversion script...i dont know of any off hand, but im sure they do exist! Chances are, even if you do find a script to convert, your going to eventually loose some of your content!
Also..no an existing Nuke Theme will NOT work with stand alone phpBB2 or phpBB3....
Nukes template system runs from .tpl extensions, as phpbb3 template system operates from .html extensions!
You can in essence port a nuke theme to phpbb3 which is something you would need to contact a designer about...
You will not recieve help from me if i have to go digging for your CMS information and version, If i have to take the time to play 21 questions, then you can take the time to google!
No Copyright, no support either!
I known a few clans now drop there phpBB3 forums/sites and transfur over to nuke, Yes it will entitle loosing all post and everyone will need to re-register, but its actually not that big of a deal, I know since my clan went through it about 1 year ago. Overall, we are happy we did. If you do decide to do that then I suggest setting up the nuke and getting the site going before you shut down the phpBB3. Overall, its up to you and if you really feel like switching.

Well our clan began in October last year, and we started off with an asp based forum. We had 3000+ posts in the first 2 months but then i realised we need the power of a phpbb forum, so i switched and of course all posts were lost.
We now currently have 8000+ posts and i would hate to loose them again, plus my clan would probably kill me if i said i am switching again and that all posts would be lost...again lol.
I was hoping that nuke just used the phpbb3 software as its main database for users, but i guess its not that simple....
I take their are no scripts i can run to get the user info into the other parts of nuke that needs it?

what your looking for is called a 'SQL Conversion Script' which is a text file ran through your phpmyadmin panel and used to convert one database to make compatable with another database type:
If you open your phpmyadmin an look at the '$prefix'_user table of your phpBB3 database... in essence you need to have ALL 'Fields' in that structure to match what would be in your Nuke Distro...
As i stated, I ( KNOW ) someone has a conversion script already, but i ( DONT KNOW ) who...
If I had to guess off hand who would have come close to this type of conversion, and i hate to steer people away from this website but...
'Killigan' at www.darkforgegfx.com has a really good knowledge base of SQL DB structures of most Nuke Distros as well as non-nukes...
I can guarantee you that hes trustworthy ( Hes my former boss )and he is very inelegant when it comes to SQL ...
Before you do anything, your going to have to decide WHAT distro of nuke your going to convert to....
While they are ALL nuke, they do NOT have all the same features and functions.. and because of that, any conversion script used, WILL be different. Example:
md5 hash is different from old distros to new. md5 has is basicly an encrypted password...passwords are NOT saved on the database in accessible format, they are 'encrypted' using an md5(algorithm) then stored to the database... when a user logins in, the type in a password, that typed in password is then converted to the md5(algorithm) and then checked for match, if match is found, then they can access, if not, then the user is rejected...
that specific (algorithm) is different on some distros ( I would guess the older ones )
phpBB2 uses md5($password) which encrypts the password only 1 time
Nuke Evolution uses md5(md5(md5(md5(md5($password)))))) which encrypts the password 5 times
if those algorithms do NOT match, then modifying your database from phpBB3 to the choice of your nuke distro is basically useless because nobody will be able to login!
And this is just 1 example of 1 database field that doesnt allow any room for screw-ups!
