Post Common mistakes of webmasters Posted: Fri Jun 06, 2008 7:12 am

This Post will be updated as I come across information pertaining to common webmaster mistakes.

Spam Problems:
1st Culprit is almost always allowing ( Anonymous Visitors ) to post or submit content to your website. If you allow persons with the need to create a registered account, then your simply begging to be spammed. This includes requiring ( Email Verification for Registration)!!!

2nd Culprit is normally an Out Dated Security System. As a Webmaster its your ( RESPONSIBILITY ) to protect your website and your database. Allowing 14 months worth of laps time before updating is like painting a target on your website for kiddy-scripters to learn how to use old exploits.

Common Misconceptions
Putting too much faith into the ( Captcha ) system ( Image verification ) upon submit. It should come as no surprise that 'Spam Bots' can bypass it and have been doing so for over a year now. Lets not forget those people with poor eye sight that literally cant register because they cant see the image!

IP Bans, arent accurate. 95% of all ISPs operate from Dynamic IPs ( They change often )...not to mention there are countless sites with instructions on how to reset your modem, to instantly assign a new IP!

Slow Page Load Times:
90 times out of a hundred...it comes down to Images. Be it too many Remote Linked Images, or too many massive images.
Images sizes
Large dimension images ( 200 x 200 ) images should be sliced. Loading multiple small images is faster then loading single large images.
Hotlinking
Linking an image from a remote server is often frowned upon. Most Webmasters dont want to share bandwidth with competing sites and if caught, your domain may get blocked, resulting in the image not displaying on your site. Not even considering that, and image that has to be imported from another server to yours, takes longer then duplicating the image and storing it on your own server.
Multiple remote linked images can add several seconds to page load times!

I had the problem with spammers too,
the standart nuke (7.9) allows anonymous persons a lot.
I modified those things myself so they cant submit anything anymore.
I also use email verification, but ended up with 80 waiting users (spammers)
After that I put on the security codes (first fixed them because they weren't working)
since then I don't get spam on my site anymore.

Today I was looking in my database, and then I saw that there were 25 waiting users. Even though I have the security code on.
What I do see is that the email adresses are all .cn
Damn Chinese :D They just have nothing better to do :P

security codes prevent 'Bot' registration..thats all its good for...but then again..email verification should prevent bots from registering as well! so there really is no need for the Captcha system..because its nothing more then an added function that does nothing more then aid the Webmaster in feeling better about a security system.

I use CNB Your Account 4.4.1
You can block domain names with it.
So I just filled in .cn in the Blocked Mail Domains field.
And now they can't make an account anymore.

Doesn't get any closer to the truth.

I have Nuke Membership approval on an my forum is 100% Members only. Sure i get a few fake registrations but thats the price you pay for being alive!

And about the .cn: F%^*CK the chinese. I work with them every day (Import/Export) and all i can say is: BA%^&*ARDS
(Not that the registrations are actually made by Chinese. Just another fraud by some louche organization.
