I dont want to get flammed here but wanted to add my comments if you dont mind.

As for what you are looking for in phpnuke should be considered into what you want to do.

If you are wanting something that pretty much load and go then ravennuke had a great package. But I guess here Is my question, what are you wanting to learn to do?

Myself, i dig into things to get them to work, and really look into how some of the stuff gets done. I learn the simple changes to do to get the forums done the way I want and just alot of the simple things that you want to do.
I have learned alot, and it was not becuase I went with the package deal. There is alot of great people here that are more then willing to help anyone that is trying to help themselves, and sometimes you can learn something that will help others.

I went with nuke8.1...I like whats there, and there has been some bugges that have been taken care of, and there are probally others that I havnt really found yet. But that is just me. I guess to be finalize, You choose what you want to put time into and learn. Truse me I have re-installed so many times and restored from backups so many times I have fallen asleep. But I am learning something everyday, and when I dont I ask here and these great people help.

Nuke the self version is always nice to use becuase it gives you that clean virgin feel for your own coding sources.

Ive been using php for years.

However ive re visited installing newer versions and sure i can get them running but it seems some things arent the same.

the WYSIG isnt working right, you cant store

tags correctly in the database correctly. Also Editing content entries are now buggy as hell. Ive sent a tell Paul Landaski one of the fathers of php on his site telling him about these problems. Hes one of the developers that have contributed to nuke a lot with Nukecops.com. Maybe we can breath some life into nuke again.

Using different releases of nuke by authors is ok for people in certain situations. For one example i couldnt deploy a Nuke Raven version becuase of the compatibilty issues with IIS 6.0. Raven's Version is apache specific with heavy reliance on .htaccess and .staccess for security needs where a windows server doesnt use these.

Hopefully Paul will come out of retirement but i doubt he will want to fix another version that Franciso just fcks up again. Buts thats my opinion. You would think Francisco would have paid close attention to all the third parties making these fixes to his releases. And its more or less looking stupid on his end to not have all the fixes others have implented over the past 5 years.

I don't suppose there is any point in me mentioning which version or fork of phpNuke I use for my site lol.
However I would like to correct a statement made by Ghost on page one of this thread in which he wrote

When RavenNuke v2.02.02 was relased it did have the latest version of Nuke Sentinel. It did not have the latest public released 'Patches' because they are no longer being deployed - we had to go beyond what was currently available.
I'm not quite sure where you got your information from that "the package just died" as v 2.20.01 was only very recently released.
I will be the first to admit that there was a long delay between v 2.10.x and v2.20.x and that was mostly down to the couple of phpBB updates and about 6 Nuke Sentinel updates that had to be incorporated and then tested plus some un-published vulnerabilities that were fixed so we had to start testing all over again.
With hindsight it would have been quick and easy to just wack the updates in and keep our fingers crossed it worked but thats not how things are done.

If you were to ask me if RavenNuke was the best content management system, my answer has to be NO. I have used one thats better but it also costs $600 a YEAR for the license.
If you were to ask me if it was the most secure content management system, my answer would have to be "I don't know" - I have not tested every other content management system so I cannot compare them.

One thing I do know, I can go away for a couple of months and not lose a single nights sleep over worrying if my site will be there when I get back :)

There is no such thing as a "Secure" Open Source program.

I agree with the qualifying your needs and desire to learn and find the program to fit those needs. All the programs mentioned here have their own plus and minuses, so picking one needs not be about the program but what you are wanting, rather willing to put into it. The consideration regarding technical assistance is another consideration and one the original poster needs to take the time and view all the main PhP Nuke CMS sites. Somewhere in these forums there is a list of these main sites.

Qualifying needs, desire to learn and available assistance should be the main 3 objectives. Yes, security is important but all the sites will be continually updating if they are worth anything.

Always, ALWAYS, remember, PhP Nuke is Open Source and will NEVER truly be secure, it's the nature of the beast. Make frequent back-ups and don't be surprised if one day you open your site one day finding it's been hacked. It will happen, be prepared for the inevitable.

You are absolutely right, you choose what is right for you based on your needs. Sometimes that means compromising if not all your needs are met in one package or 'script'.
Then again, it depends on what you call 'secure' - nothing is ever completely secure regardless of whether it is Open Source or not. PHP, Perl, Python are all Open Source which are considered secure but we all know that depending on how they are implemented, this is not always the case.

To say that anything Open Source is not secure implies anything that is NOT Open Source IS secure - I'll let Mr Gates know, he'll be well chuffed :)
